The importance of stimming

September 10, 2016 by Henny Kupferstein, Ph.D.

One of the things I do with my students is teach them the importance of stimming, and why they need it for self regulation. Rather than silencing their god-given abilities to organize, I encourage it. This kid says it like it is!

I love myself. At last. That’s enough. AI: Generate a photo of Stephen Hawking, gazing with his eyes on an Ouija board and people around him are applauding. #fc #facilitatedcommunication when is a letter board real enough to the lay naysayers of this world?! #communication #communicationfirst Maui sunset #banaba #goldenhour #sandiegosunset when the sun goes away, the solar lights come on in my garden paradise Stayed at a friend's in Portland a while back, and you know what? They had a skylight at an angle in the bathroom, and when I took afternoon #siesta naps, the sun would position in the sky just the rays would warm me like a hug and kiss. Treat your guests like this, and they will keep coming back :) In December 2025, two Arizona mothers, Tiana Brandon and Jessica Parisi, filed a civil lawsuit alongside Centria Healthcare LLC, one of Arizona’s largest autism therapy providers. The case, Brandon, Parisi, and Centria Healthcare LLC v. Mercy Care et al. (CV2025-066037), was filed in Maricopa County Superior Court. The Arizona lawsuit began with a contract dispute, not a denial of care Henny Kupferstein <henny@hennyk.com> Spellers deserve to be heard—not put on trial by naysayers who dismiss their words before listening. This new piece flips the burden back where it belongs: onto the behavioral gatekeepers who claim the authority to judge autistic communication. Read and share if you believe spellers should be defended, not silenced.
