The importance of stimming

September 10, 2016 by Henny Kupferstein, Ph.D.

One of the things I do with my students is teach them the importance of stimming, and why they need it for self regulation. Rather than silencing their god-given abilities to organize, I encourage it. This kid says it like it is!

Lumbar support, space age technology #deeppressure #actuallyautisticadult I started a new nonspeaking autistic student (7) with piano lessons this week. When it came time to direct his body to the instrument, I asked what type of support he would like: Mind, Body, Both, etc. He chose BOTH. The rest, is history! I FEEL EXTREMELY JOYFUL. Music was made. Connections were built. I am a big believer in the peer support approach. If an autistic professional is a role model, the students grow up with a healthy autistic identity. They learn to believe, to hope, to expect outcomes that are achievable. @communication4allorg Hug a heart with confidence. Artwork from @2creategallery Define inclusion, softening, and community. I witnessed the members of @congregationdorhadash who have been members for 25+ lengths of time, and the #shofar #ramshorn calling us to pause and think. Ordinary sights of a San Diego Neighborhood There is something quietly healing about opening a stranger’s old photograph and spending an hour giving them back a smile, removing a crease from a grandmother’s face, or imagining a photograph that was never taken. It’s tea time Mr Canine has his own piano and toy stash and artwork. Now if he can transpose to Eb minor… I do not wish to speak with you. Tell a person to use this card in a language they can communicate in. All humans have rights.
